Uprooted is a 3-week learning tour for young adults (ages 18-25) and is coordinated by MCC Alberta and MCC Saskatchewan. Approximately 8 young adults will travel to the northern & southern borders of Mexico to explore themes of migration & peacebuilding. This learning tour is hosted by MCC Mexico & MCC West Coast.

Uprooted provides a rich opportunity for young adults to travel with MCC and learn about migration issues in Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States.

Uprooted is available for course credit through Canadian Mennonite University (CMU)! See the application form or contact Thomas Coldwell at MCC Alberta to find out more.

Participant Cost: $2,900 (Includes all costs: orientation in Canada, international airfare, accommodations, in-country transportation and food. Fundraising is encouraged and (if needed) MCC will work alongside the participants to fundraise a portion of the program costs).

CMU course credit: receiving credit for Uprooted requires extra costs.

            $100 Administration fee (paid to CMU)

            $400 Accreditation and Instructor fees (paid to MCC)

            Total cost for students receiving course credit is $3,400.

The itinerary is subject to change, however this provides an overview of what participants can expect. 

May 1 - 3 

Orientation in Calgary

May 4 

Depart for Tapachula Mexico

May 5 - 9 

Visit the southern border: Witness border crossing, travel into Guatemala, visit to San Marcos, Sibinal, Marlin Mine, host family overnight stay, connect with community organizations

May 10 - 15 

Mexico City: Visit historic cultural sites, meet with refugee organizations, connect with MCC Mexico staff. 

May 16 

Travel to Phoenix 

May 17 - 23

Visit the northern border: Travel to Nogales, Agua Prieta, Douglas, Green Valley & Florence.

Visit community organizations, detention centres, local individuals & groups advocating for and working to support migrants.

May 23 - 25 

Debrief & return to Calgary
