This webinar will cover some of the basics to understanding the refugee crisis while also unpacking policy and international development, with a special focus on the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Richard BelchamExecutive Director of Inasmuch Community Society in Abbotsford

Richard Belcham is Executive Director of Inasmuch Community Society in Abbotsford. Inasmuch provides transition housing, settlement services, and customized employment support for refugee claimants in the Fraser Valley. He is a passionate advocate for refugee claimants and loves to remove barriers to service access, giving them the very best start to their new lives in Canada.

He has been involved with MAP since 2018, first as a member and then as Co-Chair of the Information Working Group, where he worked with a team to create the MAP website, as well as Starting Over – an evening of stories and more, at the University of the Fraser Valley. As Co-Chair of MAP, he’s been integral to the acquisition of projects to assist refugees seeking housing via the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development, and Competitiveness. Richard also co-hosted MAP’s first online celebration of World Refugee Day in June 2020.

Prior to working for Inasmuch he was Employee Experience Manager at a large manufacturing company in the Fraser Valley. He has an extensive background in HR, corporate communications, and marketing. Originally from the UK, Richard immigrated to Canada in 2011 and has been a resident of the Fraser Valley ever since.

Richard is also the host of the Along the Way podcast featuring refugee stories.

  • Jennifer Mpungu, Migration and Resettlement Program Coordinator for MCC BC 

Jennifer Mpungu is the Migration & Resettlement Program Coordinator at Mennonite Central Committee in BC.  Since 2005, Jennifer has given leadership to the refugee work of MCCBC. She has the unique perspective of experiencing firsthand the complexity of the refugee continuum that starts with displacement to permanent resettlement. From her Abbotsford office, she equips and partners with Mennonite congregations, families, and diverse community groups to sponsor refugees from overseas while advocating for refugee rights and policies that support newcomers in Canada.  She considers herself blessed to be in a position where she can combine ministry and her passion.
