In Winnipeg’s Elmwood community, and across the city, vulnerable youth and young adults can face significant barriers on the path to employment. For newcomers, indigenous youth, youth from low-income backgrounds and those living with disabilities, a desire to succeed at work may not be enough to overcome the challenges they face—particularly when it can be difficult to gain relevant experience.
At Sam’s Place, a vibrant café and bookstore in Elmwood, MCC offers a supportive and welcoming environment where youth—including those who face barriers to employment—can gain new skills and find a caring community. Our Youth Program offers training and mentorship so youth can develop the skills and confidence to succeed in a workplace. Today, dozens of youth in the city are in full time jobs after their volunteer experience at Sam’s Place.
