Each issue of A Common Place highlights an aspect of our service. In this issue, we focus on MCC’s work in creating healthier futures for vulnerable people in Asia and Africa. Past issues have highlighted different program themes and geographical locations.

Taken as a whole, MCC’s work exemplifies the vertical and horizontal dimensions of devotion to God as expressed by our guiding biblical text for this past year: “…Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind… Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:36)

As I write my final column for A Common Place, I think of MCC’s mission throughout the 16 years I have served as executive director. I am confident that our mission of “service in the name of Christ” remains as true and appropriate today as it did when MCC began almost 100 years ago.

When I was informed of Rick Cober Bauman’s appointment as the new executive director for MCC in Canada, I phoned Rick and said this: “When I leave on September 30, I will be completely at peace and confident.” My highest compliment to my successor.

I look forward to his columns in this space. As for me, I will remain a reader of A Common Place and an avid supporter of our mission.
