From the beginning, Material Resources (MR) has played a key role in MCC’s mission towards relief, development, and peace in the name of Christ. MR provides emergency relief to vulnerable people facing crises around the world. In order to make the greatest impact, MR relies heavily on dedicated volunteers and generous donations. Over the last 100 years, many stories have been shared by people who once received help from MCC. This story tells how one bar of soap bubbled into decades of generosity.
After World War II, Frieda Peters and her family were living in a refugee camp. In the midst of their fear and pain, they were given an MCC refugee bundle. Upon opening the bundle, Frieda’s mother found items that were lovingly packed for them. She was especially drawn to a beautiful bar of soap. She passed it around to every family member, and they each relished in the clean scent that had almost become a memory.
This moment was forever etched in the minds of the Peters family. So much so, that Frieda’s mother later began making soap donations to MCC’s MR program in Alberta. Every year, on her birthday, Frieda’s mother would donate a quantity of soap based on her age - as a birthday gift to herself. This tradition continued with Frieda and her sister after their mother’s passing. When her sister passed away, Frieda continued donating soap each year in the quantity of her sister's age and her own age. Frieda was 96 years old when she donated her last batch of soap in 2014.
This is just one example of the impact that one relief kit or hygiene kit has on those facing a crisis and desperate for the most basic needs. Every helping hand that volunteers and generous heart that donates, not only supports the MCC Material Resources operation but also plays an important role in making a difference in the lives of many people around the world.
During this holiday season of giving, consider supporting MCC Material Resources, whether it be through making a relief kit, providing a financial gift, or even just donating a few packaged bars of soap or another relief item. Every form of support helps to make a difference. For in the words of Aesop:
No act of kindness however small, is ever wasted.
