On June 15th Ryan Wolfe and his brother-in-law Calvin Elias, set out from Jasper on their bicycles to complete a 700+ km ride in support of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) that would finish in Edmonton five days later. Ryan and Calvin specifically chose Fundamaya , an MCC food security partner in Guatemala, to receive their support. This project seeks to help young, Guatemalan, small holder farmers gain access to land and to the wealth of traditional agricultural knowledge, both of which have been harder to come by due to recent civil war and the challenges of the global economy. All of this then improves the local community, both agriculturally and financially. The dedication and pure drive of these two young men was obvious as they braved mountain passes, busy highways and torrential rain to reach their goal! MCC is so grateful for their vision and incredible energy. They raised just over $30,000, an amazing feat! Grateful thanks go out to them, their supporters and their supportive families from MCC Alberta and from the Guatemalan farmers who will, as a result, be able to remain in their rural communities rather than be forced to migrate to other parts of Central and North America. Fantastic job guys!
