With sadness, we announce the closure of the MCC Thrift Shop at 101 Hazelglen Drive in Kitchener. This shop's last day open to the public is Friday, February 18.
Many factors have contributed to the decision to close MCC Ontario's newest thrift shop with the continued impact of COVID-19 and repeated closures at the forefront.
MCC signed the lease for this shop in December 2019, and the shop scheduled to open in May of 2020. Due to the global pandemic, construction paused in March of 2020. MCC Thrift on Hazelglen finally opened in November 2020. Since then has experienced public health-related closures and has not had the opportunity to build a solid customer base despite the team at MCC Thrift Hazelglen's strong efforts.
MCC Ontario’s six other thrift shops (St. Catharines, Leamington, New Hamburg, Stouffville, Elmira, Kitchener) continue to show strong results. Their long history and strong customer foundations have allowed them to flourish despite multiple closures.
The inaugural Reuse Report from Marcari and GlobalData reveals a robust second-hand market. The total resale market has grown by over 50% in the past five years, and that exponential growth is expected to continue for several years. We anticipate seeing MCC Ontario’s thrift shops take advantage of this trend and post record sales.
We want to thank the MCC Hazelglen staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication. This team has been dedicated to making MCC Hazelglen a success and has changed course multiple times since opening. Unfortunately, the outcome was beyond their control.
Please be in prayer for our colleagues and volunteers at MCC Thrift Hazelglen as we travel this path.
