In Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia where opportunities for youth are limited, Community C.A.R.E.S. Youth Outreach, an MCC partner, provides support. “What we’re trying to do is to give young people the resources so they can work together to make their lives and the lives of their children better and make a positive contribution to the community,” says Executive Director Dorothy Halliday. Their programs teach skills to young people aged 17-30 and support them in connecting with their community.
“So many people drop out of school around here…. [Dorothy] gets them on their feet and sends them in the right direction.”
CCYO focuses on young people because they “were getting left behind and no one was paying attention to them,” says Halliday. “Some of them have some inner motivation to turn things around… so there was a place to start.”
